3 Days vs 5 Days to Merzouga: Which Should You Book?

Both routes end at the same dunes. Here's exactly what the extra two days change — and how to tell which one fits your trip.

If you're choosing between our two routes, the question usually isn't "which is better" — it's "which fits the trip I'm actually taking." The 3-day Marrakesh ⇄ Merzouga loop and the 5-day Fes → Marrakesh crossing share the same heart — a night at Erg Chebbi — but they're built for different itineraries and different paces.

What the 3-day loop is built for

If your trip is centered on Marrakesh — riad booked, flights in and out of the same airport — the 3-day loop is the obvious fit. It's also the right call if you're combining the desert with other stops on a wider Morocco trip and can only spare a few days for the Sahara specifically. You still get the full highlight reel: the High Atlas crossing, Aït Ben Haddou, a night under canvas at Erg Chebbi, and a sunset camel trek — just at a brisker pace.

The trade-off is time. One night at the dunes means one sunset, one dinner, one sky full of stars — memorable, but a single sitting rather than two.

What the extra two days actually add

The 5-day route isn't the 3-day loop with padding — it's a genuinely different crossing, starting in Fes instead of looping back to Marrakesh. That one-way shape unlocks a few things the 3-day loop can't:

A simple way to decide: if your flights are round-trip through Marrakesh, default to the 3-day loop unless you specifically want the second desert night. If your flights are into one city and out of another — or you have five days free rather than three — the crossing route almost always makes better use of your time.

Can you turn a 3-day trip into 5, or the reverse?

Yes, and it's a common request. A 3-day loop can be extended to 4 with an extra night in the Dadès or Todra area; a 5-day crossing can be trimmed to 4 by tightening the Middle Atlas stops. Mention your available dates when you request a quote and we'll adjust the route rather than force you into a fixed template.

What doesn't change between the two

Whichever route you pick, the core experience is identical: a private (or shared) vehicle, a licensed driver-guide, the same tiered accommodation options, and the same choice of camel, quad or buggy at the dunes. You're not trading down by choosing the shorter route — you're choosing a different shape of the same trip.
